When Creativity Gets Unexpected (And Why That’s a Good Thing)
As a Nashville-based branding and commercial product photographer, I’ve learned that some of the best creative moments don’t come from a perfectly detailed plan, they come from leaving room for the unexpected.
Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph branding product images for fitness expert and entrepreneur Heidi Powell, known for her work on Extreme Weight Loss. She has developed a line of incredible health products designed to be used alongside her fitness app, and she trusted me with something every photographer appreciates: full creative control.

In creative work, the ideas that seem a little unexpected at first often turn into the most memorable images.
Case in point: popsicles.
Painting with popsicles definitely wasn’t part of the original plan. It was one of those mid-shoot ideas where you pause and think, “This might be different… but let’s try it.”
So we did.
Bright colors, playful textures, melting popsicles, and fitness products somehow came together to create something bold, energetic, and incredibly fun & far more interesting than a standard “product on a table” shot. Sometimes the best images happen when you allow space for experimentation.

Creativity Takes Time
Another important truth about creativity is that it takes time.
The most interesting concepts rarely appear instantly. They develop during the process—while adjusting lighting, moving products around, testing textures, or simply allowing ideas to evolve.
When a shoot is rushed just to capture the safe shot, you can miss the moments where creativity really shines. Taking the time to explore ideas (even the unexpected ones) can lead to images that feel fresh and different.
And in a crowded marketplace where many brand photos start to look the same, those extra moments of creative exploration can be exactly what sets your brand apart from the competition.

Trust Is the Secret Ingredient
What made this shoot especially great was the trust behind it.
Heidi trusted the creative process. She sent her products, gave me the freedom to explore ideas, and allowed the shoot to evolve naturally. That kind of trust is a gift for any creative professional.
When business owners allow space for creativity, photographers and brand storytellers can create images that stand out! Leaving clients with images that feel alive instead of formulaic!

For Business Owners:
If you’re planning your next product shoot, remember—you don’t have to control every single detail. When you work with a photographer whose work you trust, sometimes the best thing you can do is step back and let the creative process unfold. You might end up with something more dynamic, more memorable, and more uniquely you than you expected. And if it involves popsicles… even better.
For Photographers & Creatives:
Try the unexpected thing. Test the idea that feels a little different and lean into the playful, messy moments that happen during a shoot. Give yourself the time to explore instead of rushing to the safe shot. Not every experiment will work—but the ones that do might turn into the images your clients remember most.

Creativity Is Meant to Be Fun
At the end of the day, branding photography isn’t just about documenting a product, it’s about creating visuals that tell a story and make people feel something.
This shoot with Heidi Powell was a perfect reminder that creativity thrives when you embrace the unexpected—and give the process the time it deserves.
Because sometimes the ideas you never planned end up creating the best shots.
